When can a family apply for a state school place?

For many families relocating to the UK, the timing of applying for—and securing—a place at a state school is often the most critical part of the move. Yet understanding exactly when an application can be submitted is far from straightforward.

Government guidance states that families may apply for a state school from an overseas address, and that the responsible admissions authority (usually the local council, or in some cases the school itself) should be able to process the application.

In practice, however, most admissions authorities expect to see proof of residence before allocating a school place. What counts as “residence” varies widely—even between neighbouring councils.

Some require evidence of long-term, habitual residence in a rental property. Others will accept applications from a temporary address, such as serviced accommodation. In certain areas, applications can be made from overseas if there is proof of arrival within a set timeframe, for example by providing a flight ticket.

Matters can become more complex in “dual system” councils, where some schools manage their own admissions while others fall under the local authority’s control.

Timing is another important factor. In-year applications are generally subject to tighter restrictions than applications for the main entry points into state schools at ages 4+, 7+, 11+ and 16+.

For every relocating family, it is essential to understand the rules of the specific local authority or authorities being considered.  Clear expectations at the outset help avoid disappointment and make housing and schooling decisions easier to align.

Even with moves that are not planned for months, we do find that managing a family’s expectations early is the best route forward.
