School uniform – the hidden cost
The government has announced new measures aimed at reducing the cost of school uniforms for families across the country.
A survey by survey by The Children’s Society found parents of secondary school children paid on average £422 per year, and parents of primary school children about £287.
Uniform costs are often a financial commitment that relocating families don’t include in budgets – often as many countries run schooling systems that don’t require them.
Under the new regulations, schools will be required to keep branded items to a minimum and ensure that essential pieces, such as shirts, trousers, and skirts, can be purchased from multiple retailers rather than a single, often expensive supplier.
By promoting affordability and competition among retailers, the government hopes to create fairer conditions for families and prevent unnecessary financial strain.
