Rebuilding English education pathways
🎓 Rebuilding education around more than one pathway
The Prime Minister has pledged to “rebuild a comprehensive education system” and create greater parity between academic and technical education.
Speaking at Labour Party Conference, Andy Burnham said too many young people had been “cast adrift” by a school system overly focused on the university route.
The proposed changes include:
-
Vocational pathways for 14–16-year-olds to be available in all schools from 2028
-
New vocational GCSEs from 2029
-
45-day work placements for students aged 16–18
-
More apprenticeship opportunities for 18-year-olds
-
Shorter waiting times for mental health support
The stated ambition is to create “good-quality pathways for all” and ensure young people receive the right support at the right time.
It’s an important shift in the conversation around education and skills: success after school doesn’t have to mean following a single route.
The challenge now will be turning these commitments into high-quality opportunities that genuinely work for young people, schools and employers.
