Is applying out of age group possible for state schools?

We are finding more relocating families requesting UK state school places outside their child’s normal age group — often due to differences in international curriculum, academic calendars, special educational needs, or because a child is working ahead of age peers. However, many families are unaware that these requests are not routinely approved.

While UK law allows flexibility, the default expectation is that children join the year group matching their chronological age. Local authorities generally view this as the best option for social, emotional, and academic development, meaning out-of-age-group placements remain uncommon — still under 1% nationally despite rising demand.

For families who believe an alternative placement is essential, strong preparation is key. This would entail gathering solid supporting documentation, communicating clearly and early with council admissions teams and schools, and ensure application timing aligns with the correct admissions cycle. This guidance is also relevant for families considering deferred Reception entry for summer-born children.

As practices vary between council areas, this should allow for setting realistic expectations in navigating this more complex admissions route.
